Michigan tax law provides that businesses pay property taxes- but over the last decade, a large number of "Big Box Stores" have been using (or some say mis-using) tax law, to get lower tax values on their store properties. Instead of using the fair market value of an active, thriving big box store- these corporations are saying that their tax bills should be based on ONLY THE VALUE OF THE BUIlDING as if it were an abandoned, empty store in a run=-down neighborhood. The result- is that big corporations, employing hundreds or thousands of people, and making large profits,. are treated as if their stores will vacant facilities. Today, I talk with Joanne Galloway, Executive Director of the Michigan Center 4 Change, about "Dark Stores". and attempts to modify the tax law to fix this loophole.

Michigan Minimum Wage may jump in February

Michigan Minimum Wage Court Case
January 4th, 2023 12:00am | Duration: 4:56
Michigan may be getting another jump in the minimum wage soon. Back in 2018, a group turned in petitions to let voters decide if they wanted to raise the minimum wage to 12 an hour by 2022, and fix the lagging "tipped wage". After the republican legislature prevented voters from weighing in, the petitioners sued, and the Court ruled that the State would have to adopt the higher wage, or change the law before February 19, 2023. That date is almost here, and it looks now like the higher wage may go into effect that day. The new Michigan minimum wage would go to 13.03 for most employees, and to 11.73 for Michigan tipped employees. Mark Brewer is the attorney leading the case.
