TRAVERSE CITY Northern Michigan Construction Hike for Hope

From 10:00AM to 12:30PM

As part of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Construction Hike for Hope, I will be hiking on May 17, 2026, at Hull Park and the Boardman Lake Loop Trail to promote the critical importance of suicide prevention within the construction industry. I won’t be hiking alone, many others who share a strong commitment to saving lives and supporting mental health in our industry will be joining me.The need has never been greater. In 2023, 49,476 people died by suicide, and an estimated 1.6 million individuals attempted suicide. Within the construction industry specifically, the suicide rate is more than four times higher than the national average. Each loss is a tragedy, and each of us has a role to play in preventing this leading cause of death. For me, this mission is deeply personal. My husband, Darek Purgiel, died by suicide in May 2025. Darek was a partner at Grand Traverse Construction and spent his entire career in the construction industry. Since his passing, I have dedicated myself to championing suicide prevention, expanding mental health awareness, and supporting others who may be struggling silently. Our goal is simple but urgent:To raise awareness, spark conversation, and ensure mental health is valued just as highly as physical safety in construction.I invite you to join me on this meaningful hike. Your presence sends a powerful message,; that no one has to face mental health challenges alone, and that together, we can bring hope to families, colleagues, and communities affected by suicide. We need you.Together, we can stop suicide.Warmly,Sarah EllisCo‑Chair, Northern Michigan Construction Hike for HopeAmerican Foundation for Suicide Prevention
